Abu Simbel would be one of the greatest sights on Earth even if it hadn't been
transported to a new location 210 feet higher in 1968 to prevent it from
being submerged beneath the waters of Lake Nasser behind the Aswan High
Dam. Pennies from children the world over formed the basis of a great
engineering feat as a Polish team created two man-made mountains to host
not only the great facades of Ramses II and Nefertari but also a
multi-chambered, 180 foot long temple inside the larger mountain. You
might not realize the gandeur of this 3,000 year old scene until you are
told that the small human statues shown below standing between the feet are over-sized, the
larger sitting figures being 65 feet tall.
